Amazon.co.uk Review
The Host has managed to become Korea's most successful film to date, winning acclaim both domestically and internationally, and it's easy to see why. At first glance, it looks like any other monster movie--an amphibious creature from the depths stalks and devours an urban population--but there's actually much, much more going on beneath the surface. Not that there needs to be: although it has a fairly hefty 119-minute runtime, The Host is fast moving, with plenty of action and a truly gruesome-looking monster. Visually, it's a gorgeous movie, with stunning special effects and beautiful settings (even the rather nasty sewer scenes look perversely great). However, the real crux of The Host isn't really anything to do with the monster: at heart, this is a family drama, not a horror movie.

The story focuses on one small family and how they react to the weird goings-on all around them. When the youngest member of the family, Hyun-seo, is snatched by the titular monster, the family is devastated until a call from her mobile phone gives them fresh hope. Unfortunately, everyone who came into contact with the being has been quarantined due to a virus scare, so they have to escape the Korean authorities to go on a rescue mission. Then the American army steps in, and all hell breaks loose...

It's a very original idea, with nuanced and well-written characters, plenty of humour, and a darker undercurrent of social and political commentary, topped off with a thrilling monster-killing adventure. Brilliant, in other words. --Sarah Dobbs

5 out of 5 stars Some intelligence required   July 4, 2010

Oh dear, there are a number of people here who didn't like this film because their mind wandered, or they don't like subtitles or it's a "family drama".

You know, there are certain foods I don't like to eat. But rather eat them and then criticise their taste, I stay away from the them. Makes sense?

This is more than a monster film, more than a family drama and it won't give you all the answers, either figure them out for yourself or wait for the Hollywood remake.

But...it is brilliant. The monster is amazingly designed. The plot is as sharp as hell and the acting is top notch. There is real tension here, I did wonder if seeing the monster straight away gave up too much too soon, but no, it works really well.

If you are a fan of world cinema because you are past the stage of being spoon fed, you will love it.

4 out of 5 stars Moving, amusing and politically intriguing   November 12, 2009

This is a clever parable about American imperialism, with many other subtexts. It must be the first Korean film I've ever seen and it was great fun. It felt a bit like King Lear at the end. A thoroughly enjoyable DVD experience.

What a fantastic movie!!

I came across this film late one night on Channel 4, just as I was about to hit the sack. It had just started so I didn't even know the title or know anything about it, but I was hooked: I had to stay up to watch it!

I checked the paper the next day and found the title so I could look it up on the internet. This movie was huge on its release and won a raft of awards, so I figure I'm in good company loving it so much.

I don't know what it is about this movie, maybe it was because I didn't have a clue what it was about when it flickered across the screen, but whatever it was I watched the movie again the next day too!

The movie centres around a monster that's a fabulous and pretty believable creature that just keeps on coming - it's awesomely grotesque and it just won't die! Some of the scenes are utterly and fascinatingly gruesome.

The human creatures are beautifully crafted and acted - really wonderful. Such a touching portrait of human frailty and human courage. Very touching.

Apparently there's a whole subtext about US and Korean politics and international relations, but it really isn't necessary to understand all the nuances to enjoy this movie. The monster and the humans are easily enough.

Overall the movie is really gripping and I absolutely recommend it.
